Sales season is on

You could call me a hipster…or maybe you could call me a yuppie. I believe I have trouble with fitting boxes, but maybe even this reinforces the paradigm I struggle with. I read (not that much), I spend time on social media following hip social brands, I care about climate change and I love to post pictures of my food. I love apartment plants, I am almost a vegan and I love to start my days sipping from a flat white while working on my MacBook. I never make my own coffee, I always get it from my corner coffee place.

Every single day.

Early this month I moved to NYC, the epitome of trendiness and modernity. I started looking around, trying to better relate to my new co-habitants. Most New Yorkers look really young and sometimes the city seems ageless. New Yorkers go out for dinner mostly every night, and if not, take-out food is their go-to solution. Delivery man comes several times a day. My lobby is always cluttered with parcels while the side-walks are invariably full of garbage bags every night. If you look closer those garbage bags are full of parcels and bags. I look around my small apartment and cannot help myself asking where do those New Yorkers fit their belongings? Credit score, credit cards and debt are common matters in the US. Lack of financial independence creates depression and keeps most Americans from following their dreams. Then again, US is one of the biggest retail markets in the world. Everyone around seems to be using the latest tech or wear the latest fashion styles. Homes need to be really large and mortgage is the normal solution to keep up with this American dream. I hear sales season is on, a good time to save up some money on some trendy purchases. A good moment to overspend and load those closets with useless clothes. Landfills look forward to accomodate last year’s kakis or already out of style mum jeans.

South- East Asia used to be America’s garbage bin, but nowadays more and more Asian countries impose bans on garbage imports. Dear Asia, please open up your doors. We really need a place to stack those last year’s stand-out, original outfits. How else could we get creative and original again?
