Stepping out of your Comfort Zone

One of the most important parts of being a strong writer is being able to step out of your comfort zone and write without your inner editor telling you what to do, and what not to do.

When your mind is constrained by your inner editor, fantastic ideas can slip through the cracks and never see your story.

One way we can write with more freedom and creativity is by writing in different genres. Someone who always writes Fantasy may achieve more creative success with writing something like Sci-Fi, or Non-Fiction. With experience writing in multiple genres, a writer’s main, preferred genre will become stronger as a result.

But its hard to force yourself to write in a genre you’ve barely dipped your feet in. The familiar feeling of writing is comfortable, cozy, and doesn’t necessitate change. Writing in a strange, unfamiliar genre can generate new ideas and improve overall writing skill. And, who knows? Maybe you’ll find a new favorite.

Here’s a short piece I wrote, where I took a vague writing prompt, and took it in a different direction than I initially thought of.

Here’s the prompt, simply : “The stars never came out last night.”

I rested my back on the cold, unforgiving wall. Blood from my hand dripped onto the rough already stained floor. The clothing on my body was not mine.

If I didn’t move, no sound was made. The room was completely silent aside from my clothes scratching the walls. Something was off. I looked around the room and saw no door. No windows, either.

The concrete around me felt as if it was suffocating me, and the pangs of hunger in my stomach would not subside. I began to panic.

I pounded on the walls, bloodying my hands where scrapes and bruises were already present. My fists bled, and my stomach dropped as I began to realize my fate.

I found a corner and laid there.

My stars did not come out that night.

So, now you will be doing the same thing. Write down your favorite genre, on a piece of paper.

When you’re done with that, trade it with someone else. If you have the same genre, please trade with someone else again.

Look at your new paper, and write a piece that is at least 15 lines long. Remember, try to go out of your comfort zone!
