5. Spoiler Alert

Boston, MA

What’s the problem?

Every year, nearly ⅓ of food inventory goes to waste. That amounts to approximately 20 pounds per person. At the same time, approximately 41 million Americans live in food insecure households. This means that they live without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.

How are they solving it?

Born out of MIT, Spoiler Alert is “changing the way that wasted food is handled, forever” by allowing food businesses to track and analyze the products they are and aren’t recovering. Spoiler Alert then takes the next step by creating an online marketplace that facilitates real-time food donations, discounted sales, and organic waste recovery opportunities.
