Must See! Disney a Ghost Town Because of Hurricane Dorian

Eerie photos from Disney World show the park is practically a ghost town following its closure on September 3. The park closed due to fears that Hurricane Dorian would pass over it and bring hurricane-force winds, rains, flooding, and tornadoes.

Thankfully for the Happiest Place on Earth, this didn’t come to pass. But unfortunately for the Mouse House, everyone’s staying far from the park.

The reason for the park’s closure was a bit of fear on the part of Disney that Dorian might pass overhead. Tuesday’s weather report held that the storm could forge inland over Florida, causing massive amounts of flooding as it did so.

While the Orlando area got a ton of rainfall, it thankfully avoided the worst of the storm’s fury. By Wednesday, as the storm moved north towards South Carolina, the park reopened.

People weren’t messing around with Dorian: a number of people canceled travel plans, evacuated affected areas and just generally got out of the storm’s way. This is evident when you look at Disney World today: it’s practically empty!

Another factor in this could be that Orlando’s airport was also closed on Tuesday over concerns that the storm would hew a bit too close to home. This, likewise, has made the airport a creepy ghost town, as most flights coming in have almost no one on them. Unsurprisingly, people don’t like to fly toward hurricanes.

While we’ve never been to Disney World, we could surmise it would b especially fun to visit the day after the park reopened and you were one of the only groups there. Short lines for all the rides, no crowds around concessions, and a bunch of happy Disney characters with all their time free to hang out with you? It sounds like a dream come true.

If you’ve got the spare time and money for a quick trip down to Orlando, we imagine now would be pretty much the best time to visit the park. That is, as long as you’re okay with dealing with a downright drenched park. Even near-misses with hurricanes bring serious rainfall.
