Live Your Life Like Passing Time

And enjoy it pass by ever so well

We have categorized our lives according to two rules: work and luxury. When we are working, we feel like we have a unique purpose that we have to do for the fulfillment of our life goals. When we are not working, we look for ways to pass idle time. We detest idle time. We can’t sit idly, so we watch TV, read, play games, hang out with friends or family, or (the worst of us) work even in their idle time.

I am not saying working in free time is bad. It sure is one way to beat others in this post-modern world. But what I want to bring to light is our orthodox perspective about how to approach life. An average person necessarily has to work, no doubts about that. And those who are wealthy by chance just live in luxury most of the time, barely working to earn a living.

The lens of time, however, gives us a different and odd way of looking at life. Viewed from the perspective of time, we just have to live our life in this world by staying busy to pass the time. While passing our time in life, we surely have to deal with joys and sorrows, but those are akin to a bad episode or an unfortunate incident that we have to go through.

This way of looking at life may seem morbid, but it’s not. When you know that your life is for a limited time that you only have to pass, you learn to value it and spend it happily. E.g. If I said that you had to wait 24 hours in a room, after which you will get a prize, how would you spend it? You would probably sleep for 12+ hours, entertain yourself with a book or watch a movie, maybe write down your thoughts about the ordeal or talk to family member (Don’t think too much about the rules of the example, just understand the gist of it). You wouldn’t pace around the room like an anxious person waiting for each minute and then hour to pass. You know there is an end, so you spend it as well as you can.

It’s true that some of us have it much worse than others and that life is unfair. But it’s important to remember that every struggle only gives you a purpose to pass your time in this life. And passing time is simple. You just have to get yourself busy. So why not just pass it with a smile, sort of an amusement almost. And you know what they say. Time flies when you’re having fun.
