How to Overcome Your Fear of Writing as a New Writer

You know that feeling of angst you get when you first sit at the computer to write something, anything?

The fear that grips your entrails at the mere thought of strangers looking at your words and snickering at them.

The dread that pushes you to surf the Web or watch movie #1764 on Netflix.

Yes, that feeling. I get it too.

Every day.

I’ve wanted to write for as long as I can remember. But it’s only last year that I began writing regularly. “Regularly” being the operative keyword. Before that, I always thought that my writing wasn’t good enough, or that I had nothing to say, or that what I wanted to say wasn’t useful to others.

That may still be the case. But still, I write.

Not only do I write, but my writing has become more personal, less cookie-cutter, and I’ve allowed myself to share it with others.

Maybe you feel like I did last year. Perhaps you have the urge to write but can’t seem to get over that initial hump to get you moving.

It was not easy to get over it, but looking back, I see that the hump was much smaller than I made it in my head.

If you are facing that same obstacle, and you feel that it is preventing you from writing, then read on.

If you want to write, just write. Nobody needs to see what you’ve written; nobody needs to know your most inner thoughts; nobody needs to know your weird theories on life.

Write strictly for yourself, so it won’t matter how well you write. Nobody will ever read it. Maybe not even you!

Fear sets in when you consider writing and publishing as being the same. That’s when you begin to wonder what people will say, what people will think, how they will react, and so on.

The tougher the subject, the harder it will be to write about if your goal is to publish it. You will think twice before proceeding. That’s one thought too many.
