No one wants to spend time with hardened criminals, right?
Just having to go and visit a loved one who’s behind bars is an emotionally wrenching experience, let alone volunteering to go into a jail every week and go beyond those iron bars and then hear the loud CLANG behind you as the doors closes.
In short, it’s not for the faint hearted so hearing my husband say he wanted to volunteer to teach a Bible study in jail over 10 years ago was not music to my ears.
I had a lot of questions and a lot of caveats he had to hear first before I could even consider whether or not this would be okay with me, but it helped to know that he wouldn’t do it if I didn’t agree, so I had to consider it carefully.
His calm answer was, “because I feel this is something the Lord is leading me to do.”
Wham!
Well, that statement was pay dirt for me.
Hearing that meant I’d have to hit the floor on my knees and take this up with The Lord because there was no part of me that wanted him to pursue this.
I’m also sure my 1st reaction wasn’t anything suitable for kids to hear as I opened with, “are you out of your fricking mind?!”
And let’s just get this out here because it explains why I wondered if he’d truly lost his mind…
My husband is still a hang em’ high’ guy whenever he hears about crimes on the news. How’s that for a juxtaposition?
It’s common to hear him blurt out things like this about criminals, “they need to just cut his balls off.”
