All This Social Distancing is Making People a Little Nuts

If you are struggling with the isolation from COVID-19— you are not alone.

Before the pandemic struck, before the words “social distancing” and the great mask debate of 2020 began, we were a busy people. A social people. Yet, we were a divided people, split down political, social, and economic divides: the “haves vs. the have-nots” — a very real thing.

We have, at times, been a very divided country and now more than ever, the fissure runs deep. In my 47 years, I have witnessed the United States of America come together in times when our resolve is tested and our backbone is measured. The United States of America may sometimes be its own worst enemy but when it comes down to it — we stand, all together, to fight for this country.

Right now we fight a common enemy. An invisible enemy. An enemy that is encroaching on our liberties, testing our resilience and adaptive natures, and pressing us all into this odd place of isolation — together. Together, yet separate. All in this together — yet some suffering far more than others.

To be honest, it’s making people a bit “crazy.” Even describing it to you just now may my head feel a bit dizzy. I am being facetious, but make no mistake — this pandemic is testing our patience, shoving us a bit closer to embarrassing ourselves with a show of public “losing our cool.” It seems to be happening everywhere, every day. What we are witnessing is the expression of our characters under stress and in some cases, the revelations of mental health crises pushed to the threshold.
