Simplicity After Complexity

There are a few basics that have been important ingredients to my self-liberation. For instance, wine has always produced better insight than whiskey. When the exhausting training program of strengthing the ego becomes too much, going for a walk has no rival. The increasing amount of peacocks who are all aesthetic and have zero depth is astonishing and therefore, books (particularly poetry) are some of the most authentic elders of our time.

This last piece to consider is a bit more meta.

You think you are thinking your thoughts, but you have adopted the cultural psyche. What is this collective stream of thought? The relentless pursuit of more.

The implicit message is that there is always something else to be done, always something else to be added, always something else to be accomplished so that you can be whole. The fruit of this ambition is restlessness.

It is jarring to then realize that this way of thinking is rarely ever challenged and in fact, is the lamp that guides the steps of many institutions that run our society. The certainty of this way of life runs so deep that it is impenetrable.

But if you find yourself sweating and clenching, remember that the purest form of simplicity usually is born out of complexity.

Let these words from Eckhart boil in your heart and then buoy to the top of your mind when you need extra confirmation: “God is not attained by a process of addition to anything in the soul, but by a process of subtraction.”
