Design Analysis of 2 Different Bottles Based on Design Principles

Picture 2

What’s User’s Scenario ?

Nani is a career woman who has always applied healthy life since she was found to have kidney disease. One of the things she applied was to always drink water or juice using her own drinking water bottle, she also had several unique collection of drinking water bottles, but all had the same shape. Nani also doesn’t like the complicated things, when she doesn’t have time to fill drinking water at her house, she only carries the bottle and fills it at her office or anywhere. One day, Nani was invited to a friend’s wedding, and at that time she did not have time to bring a bottle of drinking water because the bag she was using was so small that she could not put her bottle of drinking water. Nani is very sad because the bottle she uses is a bottle that has a normal size, which cannot be carried when using a small bag. Beside that, every morning she’s always jogging or cycling around her flat. And sometimes she needs to take a break for a while and drink a water. In other case she has difficulty to carry the bottle and it was very bother her.

What’s User’s Goal to use it ?

Based on nani’s problems above, as we known she doesn’t like complicated things, and needs a bottle of drinking water that can be taken everywhere with a normal size, and fits in all the bags she wears. She also needs an efficient and effective bottle that have a handhold in her bottle so it will help her when she wants to cycle or jog.

The Object can support user’s Goals :

Just take a look for the user’s goals based on design principles and the pictures in above :

Affordance : In terms of affordability in the first bottle makes it easy to hold not only on one footstool, and can be held in several pedestals, and in the first bottles there are things that have not been reached maximally in the form of difficult use if little water is needed more effort to remove the water from the bottle, then for the standing position the bottle cannot be placed without a backrest so that the bottle cannot stand intact without any help because it is not balanced and the base is not enough to hold the weight of the bottle. In the second bottle has a design that is simple and easy to hold in the middle of the goal has been achieved to be able to be held in one hand and allows users to hold the bottle, and allows users to use the bottle, one of which is drinking directly through the bottle. Then the excess found in the second bottle is that it can be carried everywhere easily just by folding the bottle, then if it is set up the bottle has a good foundation so that it can stand perfectly and in that design affordability is already supporting to achieve that goal. The design of second bottles are simple and not confusing.

Signifier : Through the signifiers of the two bottles they have a very good sign, the user can see in the first and second bottles with a toothed shape which shows the ideal place and place to hold the bottle, and from the bottle lid from the first bottle and the second bottle has the same and simple characteristics because the way it works is very easy, that is, just pulling the bottle cap over then the bottle can be drunk

Mapping : In terms of mapping on the second bottle it is quite simple and easy because in the second bottle does not have much design and many choices so is not confusing because the placement to hold the bottle is clear and focused on one pedestal as well as the bottle cap located at the top and clearly visible, for the first bottle for mapping there are still things that are quite confusing such as the location of the bottle handle which has two supports so that it is enough to make the user confused for the placement and holding the right position, and for the placement of the bottle cap is clearly located.

Feedback : In the first bottle, the feedback can be made, such as opening the bottle by pulling up the lid, the bottle will open easily, it’s different to the second bottle the user have to push up the lid.

Discoverbility : For discoverbility of the first bottle, the users see how to open the bottle cap, which the user has to pull up the lid while the second bottle users have to push up, both ways are very easy for the user to do. In the other hand, in the first bottle the user can hold the bottle easily because the shape of the bottle that adjusts to the hand grip. However, on the other hand the bottle cannot hung on a bicycle. The second bottle is also very efficient because we have a metal hook for gripping and can hung on a bicycle and the user can also fold it into smaller ones so that it is easier to carry out or put in a big or small bag.

Constraint : The constraint on the bottle first bottle is when the user wants to drink water, the shape of the lid is very small, so it will reduces the water coming out, this can help the user because it prevents water from spilling from the bottle when drinking it. While the second bottle is more water when drunk, the risk of spilled water is greater.

How to make it better?

For the design of the first bottle, in our opinion, in terms of design, it is quite good, but if you use the design used in the first picture, the thing to fix is replacing the bottle cap that is used with a more practical and larger one. first it takes more effort to press the bottle so that the water comes out maximally. In addition, looking at the goals of the user (Nani), the second bottle is more practical and easy to use, so that it becomes the right solution for the user herself, but the second bottle still lacks in terms of models that only have a monotonous form. Therefore, designers can provide variations in forms that are more unique and interesting.
