Racial Profiling In and Around the Swimming Pool

People of color are being discriminated against because they aren’t white.

The American Swimming pool, over the course of history, has progressively been made a place of racial discrimination and targeting making people of color feel unwelcome and excluded from their communities. The people harassing them are not being held responsible for acts of racism that they commit. Instead they are let off the hook with some made up excuse, and the targeted people are punished unfairly.

Swimming has grown to be a very large part of daily life in America. Swimming is an activity that virtually every single person and family participates in, it’s what you would call a lifelong sport. Whether it is competitive swimming or just recreational, people notice racial differences in the pool. There are many assumptions made about people of color and their ability to swim and types of acts committed around public areas such as the pool, by all members of the community. People of color are largely affected by racial profiling in the swimming community because swimming as an activity and a sport is disproportionally white.

I always knew that racial differences seemed to clash a lot at public pools over history but you wouldn’t think that they would become repetitive. You would think that people would learn a thing or two regarding our nation’s history.

Many people in the US are bystanders and put themselves first and do not advocate for others well-being. It is very difficult to change a persons mindset and as long as there are bigoted people in the world who stick to their racist ideals. I believe there always should be someone there to stand up to defend what is right and advocate for the right way a person should be treated. People have the right to be treated equally and fairly. As Jennifer Richeson explained, children grow up to be racist unless they are taught not to be. I would urge you to teach your children the importance of treating everyone with respect no matter their skin color, sex or in any way related to appearance. For you to stand up for people in your community no matter who it is.

This isn't something that can just happen overnight but it takes a community as a whole to end discrimination and hate towards others. Spend time in your community and pay attention for these sorts of things happening and intervene, get rid of the bystander.
