Women Who Code Delhi Mentorship Program 2.0 Week 5

This being the last week of our mentorship program we were given the advice on how to improve our online presence.

This is a very important part of your career. As the world becomes more globalised, it becomes important for you to have a presence in the online world where almost everyone has access to Google and Facebook etc.

But this article is not about increasing followers or friends on Facebook or Instagram, this article urges you to create your presence on the professional platforms.

This is the platform where recruiters may contact you for a job opportunity directly. So go and make a LinkedIn profile now , like right now, if you haven’t already!!!

Secondly, LinkedIn isn’t another Instagram or Facebook. It is a platform to build professional connections. Hence, it is not appropriate if you just join LinkedIn and don’t accept request from your connections. That is what you are here to do, to build connections!

LinkedIn not only builds connections, it also helps you get the knowledge about various events, conferences or scholarship opportunities around you.

Therefore, LinkedIn is really important! Start keeping count of your connections on LinkedIn like you keep of your followers on Instagram! The biggest advantage is that on LinkedIn, people readily help you. Some might ignore you but that’s okay, just message to all the concerned people you can get an advice from, I do the same!

Twitter is the site where organisations regularly post about the scholarships and events being conducted, be it Outreachy, Women Techmakers, AnitaB.org, Google etc. So it is necessary to be active on Twitter as well, if you want to know about these events and scholarships.

Oh and one more thing, Twitter has a huge limitation that it has a set amount of words which you can write in one tweet. So, if you want to tweet about your experiences you can either do it by writing in limited words or by using 2–3 tweets.

Open source is one of the fields which has gained popularity in the recent times. One of the advantage of Open Source is that it helps everyone learn something new.

Suppose you have learned a language but you don’t feel confident enough to make a project, you can just go to github and explore the projects’ issues for the particular language you want to work on, comment on the issue you feel comfortable working on and when the project author assigns you that issue you can work on it.

Working on the language practically is the best way to learn it!

Sometimes you will find yourself blankly staring at the computer screen and may feel like completely giving up the open source idea. Though it would take a long time for you to understand the code of the project you are working on yet it would be worth it all in the end!

Once you are done with solving the issue you can create a pull request and then the author reviews and merges it. Congratulations! Pat yourself on your back!

If you are applying to get inside any organisation then you have to answer the why question, basically you’ll be questioned of your entire existence!
