Can the city be sustainable?
The world is becoming increasingly urbanized. Since 2007, more than half the world’s population has been living in urban areas, and proportion will rise to 60 percent by 2030. Rapid urbanization means that 4 billion people that more than half of the global population are facing the challenge that increasing air pollution, inadequate infrastructure, and services and unplanned urban expansion in cities around the world.
The population growth has resulted in ever-increasing urban population density, putting tremendous pressure on the economic, social and environmental structure and resources of many countries, and at the same time increasing the risk of climate change. These growth trends mean that we need planners, decision makers and others involved in the urban development process to recognize the emergent issues and the need to create a fairer, less environmentally impactful and more successful urban space for all people living in the city.
Environmental impacts, economic impacts and health and social effects are reflected in the vulnerability of cities to the current natural disasters that occur more frequently and increasing intensity. Therefore, it is very important to understand the urbanization trends and make proper policy recommendations in advance when facing this complicated situation. Understand the practical needs of sustainable planning and action helps promote stable and fair development for current and future generations
