His Son was Murdered but He Fought with Hope

My view on writing crime thriller fiction

Comedy was always my favorite genre. Situation comedies on TV, variety shows like Carol Burnett or Flip Wilson, and well-written movies that made you laugh were always my favorite. But crime and thriller fiction took on new and deeper meaning during the past two decades as I’ve struggled through court issues with family, business ups and downs and continually seeing evil rear its ugly head in so many ways.

Now that I’ve co-authored my fifth novel, Tom Stone: Subterfuge, I’ve realized something about crime and thriller fiction. It’s a wonderful way to present the timeless battle of good versus evil.

Contemporary authors John Grisham of The Firm and Lee Child in his many Jack Reacher stories have shown this time and again. And I felt the message more strongly than ever with our latest Tom Stone novel available on Amazon.

A man and his son from a fishing village in Baja California is forced aboard a narco-sub in a drug smuggling ring and is caught in the middle of a terrifying fight between rival cartels, battling off the coast of Southern California. His son is killed and the man, Luis Delgado, escapes from the sub and washes up on shore.

He had no power against his adversaries. That’s when Detective Tom Stone comes into the picture.

Delgado has plenty of brave resolve and this gets to the heart of what I want to grapple with as a writer. To fight against evil with hope and good people who have resources to back you up. The attitude propels Delgado through a crisis and tragedy.

Here’s a taste — an excerpt from the opening of Chapter Six:

A moment of terror gripped Delgado. A flashback to the gunfire inside

the submarine shook him. Ordered to stand on the deck and wait for his

execution added to the torment. Survival instincts took over and he dove

from the submarine into the cold ocean. It was a miracle he was still

alive. Why him?

He shook off the guilt as he paced the sidewalk outside a motel
