Donald Trump Has Been Indicted. Again.

What does this mean for the 2024 election?

Well, it’s happening.

Donald Trump has been indicted for a second time, this time because of alleged mishandling of the classified documents found inside his Mar-A-Lago estate in Florida. Documents he lied about posessing, and refused to give back.

As more and more candidates have entered the 2024 GOP primary, I wondered on multiple occasions why so many of them were deciding to run if the purpose was to stop Trump from getting the nomination. Surely they had to know that the more people were running, the more they would cut into each other’s poll numbers and votes, right?

Well, now we know…

They all knew. They all knew that this was coming, and they’ve all seized the opportunity to pounce. But what else does this mean for the Republican nomination? Frankly, it all but guarantees that Trump gets the nomination. He’s going to seize the opportunity to get the base behind him, and do what he does best: portray himself as the victim.

But, it truly cannot be overstated just how serious an espionage charge is. There is absolutely no chance he wins a general election with something like that up in the air, and we all know it. Will he go to prison? I’ll believe it when I see it. But the unlikelihood of that being a possibility doesn’t change just how significant that charge is, and how it all but dooms his chances of electoral success.

Ron DeSantis, Chris Christie, Tim Scott, they’re all going to seize this chance or at least try to do so. It’s going to be fascinating to see how they choose to approach the situation. Will they valiantly stand in Trump’s corner, or attempt to sway the base in a different direction? As if the debates already weren’t going to be chaotic enough, this certainly ups the ante doesn’t it?
